Cleaning the salt chlorinator – inspection and maintenance of the salt cell

Pooltime · Salt water & maintenance

A salt chlorinator needs the right water balance, proper flow, and a cell in good condition. Start with a check of the system before you clean or descale the electrodes.

When does a salt chlorinator need cleaning?

The salt chlorinator produces chlorine through electrolysis of salt in the pool water. Deposits on the cell can affect operation, but low chlorine levels or an alarm do not prove that the cell needs descaling. Flow, temperature, salinity, settings, and the condition of the cell must all be assessed together.

Many systems use polarity reversal to reduce deposits on the electrodes. ASEKO describes that function for ASIN Salt. However, self-cleaning does not replace the checks and maintenance stated in the current manual.

Check before you take anything apart

  1. Read and document. Note the error code, output, operating time, and whether the alarm appears immediately or after a while. Take a photo of the display.
  2. Measure the water. Check pH, free chlorine, and salinity with suitable tests. In cases of scale problems, calcium hardness and alkalinity also need to be assessed.
  3. Check the flow. See whether the filter or baskets need normal service and whether the system shows a flow alarm. Never run the cell without the flow required by the equipment.
  4. Identify the exact model. The cell type and manual version must match. The cleaning method for another salt chlorinator may not be suitable for yours.
  5. Inspect according to the manual. Is there visible buildup, foreign objects, or damaged parts? Clean only as specified and when needed.

Cleaning and descaling are different measures

Loose debris and solid mineral deposits do not require the same treatment. The manufacturer determines whether the cell may be rinsed, which cleaning agent may be used, and how contact time should be limited. Do not use metal tools, scrapers, or homemade acid mixtures on the electrodes.

If disassembly is included in the prescribed maintenance, the power supply, circulation, and automatic dosing must first be handled according to the manual. The system must be safely shut off, depressurized, and prevented from starting automatically. If you are unsure about the order, have a service technician carry out the work.

Avoid unnecessary descaling: a cleaning routine should be based on inspection and the manufacturer's instructions. Treating the cell more often or more aggressively than necessary is no shortcut to better chlorine production.

If the salt chlorinator still alarms

Symptoms Basis for the next assessment
Low output Measured chlorine level, operating time, water temperature, and production setting.
Salt alarm Independent salt measurement, temperature, and the exact alarm message.
Flow alarm Filter status, pump operation, and any changes in circulation.
Rapid recurring buildup pH history, alkalinity, hardness, and the cell's maintenance log.

Do not add salt just because an alarm appears. Excess salt can also be unsuitable for the equipment. Confirm the measurement and follow the model's permitted range. A worn or damaged cell is not always restored by cleaning.

Make maintenance easier to follow

Save the date, test results, the condition of the cell, and what actions were taken. Also check how the system should be winterized. With automatic control, regular independent water testing is still valuable. Read more about alkalinity and cyanuric acid as parts of water balance.

Frequently asked questions

Can I clean the salt cell with vinegar?

Use only the method and product explicitly approved by the manufacturer. A home remedy that works on other equipment may affect electrodes, seals, or warranty.

Does a self-cleaning salt chlorinator need service?

Yes, follow the manufacturer's inspection intervals and maintenance advice. The self-cleaning function does not mean that flow, water balance, or the condition of the cell can be left unchecked.

Why is the chlorine level low despite a clean cell?

Check operating time, setting, pool load, temperature, and water values, among other things. Ask for service help if the correct operating conditions do not produce the expected result.

Get help with the cell or operating alarm

Send the model name, alarm text, and current water values. Then we can help you determine whether the next step is adjustment, cleaning, or service.
