Sand filters for clear, clean pool water

Pool sand filters

Sand filters are the most common type of pool filter and a fundamental component in maintaining water quality. They are effective and relatively affordable for the performance they deliver. A sand filter contains fine-grained sand that effectively traps dirt particles as small as 20 microns, helping to keep the pool clean.

How does a sand filter work?

As pool water is pumped through the sand filter, it passes through the sand bed. Dirt particles cling to the sand grains while the cleaned water returns to the pool, providing continuous filtration.

Benefits of sand filters

• Effective: Sand filters are highly effective at trapping dirt particles, helping to keep pool water crystal clear.
• Affordable: Sand filters are relatively inexpensive to buy and maintain, making them an economical choice for pool owners.
• Easy to use: Sand filters are straightforward to install and maintain, reducing the need for complex work.

Drawbacks of sand filters

• Sand wear: Over time, accumulated dirt particles and water flow can wear down the sand, which may reduce filtration efficiency.
• Regular sand replacement: The filter sand needs replacing regularly to maintain optimum performance, which involves some cost and effort.

What size sand filter do I need?

The sand filter size should be carefully matched to the pool volume and water flow. An undersized sand filter cannot filter the water effectively enough, which can lead to poorer water quality and increased maintenance.

How often should I backwash the sand filter?

The sand filter should be backwashed regularly to remove dirt particles accumulated in the sand bed. Backwashing pumps water through the filter in the opposite direction, loosening dirt from the sand grains and flushing it out. This is essential to maintain the filter's efficiency and keep the pool clean and fresh.

How do I look after my sand filter?

Regular maintenance is important to keep your sand filter in optimum condition and extend its lifespan. Here are some key tips to help it last:

• Backwash the filter regularly to remove accumulated particles.
• Clean the filter tank regularly to prevent dirt and algae from building up.
• Replace the sand regularly according to the manufacturer's recommendations or when efficiency starts to decline.

Following these simple tips can help your sand filter last for many years, keeping your pool clean and inviting.
