Heat exchangers – features and uses

Heat exchangers transfer heat from an external heat source to the pool water and can be an efficient choice if the property already has a boiler or heat pump, for example. The right solution provides fast, controlled heating without a separate outdoor pool heat pump.

The usable output depends on the heat source temperature, the flow on both sides and the pool's heating requirements. Pool volume, desired temperature, season and the use of a pool enclosure or other cover all affect sizing.

Choose the right heat exchanger for your pool

Check output data at the actual flow temperature available in the system, along with materials, connections and recommended flow rates. Also plan the controls, sensors and bypass so the temperature can be regulated safely.

Installation and routine care

Keep the circulation system and filter in good condition and check connections regularly. Connection to the property's heating system must be carried out professionally and in accordance with the product instructions.

Size the system for the heat source

A heat exchanger's stated output applies at specific temperatures and flow rates. A model with a high kW rating will therefore not necessarily transfer the same amount of heat when connected to a heat source with a lower flow temperature. Include both the temperature available from the heat source and the desired pool temperature in your comparison.

The range includes Pahlén Hi-Flow, stainless steel heat exchangers for district heating and titanium models. The material must be approved for the water treatment used and its specified limits. If the pool uses salt chlorination, compatibility must be explicitly stated for the chosen heat exchanger; the material name alone does not replace the product instructions.

Two water circuits to check

The heat source circuit and the pool circuit have different functions, connections and flow requirements. Plan access for servicing and controls that can regulate the heat supply when the pool reaches the desired temperature. When enquiring, provide details of the pool volume, swimming season, cover and existing heat source. If the property lacks a suitable heat source, you can compare pool heat pumps, which draw heat from the outside air.
