Filter Balls for Pool – Compare with Sand and Glass

Pooltime · Filter media & water treatment

Filter balls are a lightweight filter medium for systems intended to use them. First check what your filter allows, then compare cleaning, quantity, and operation with sand or filter glass.

What are pool filter balls?

Filter balls are made of fibrous material that captures particles as water passes through the filter bed. They weigh significantly less than the same volume of sand. This makes the material easy to handle, but by itself it does not say how well it will work in a particular treatment system.

The filter tank, its internal parts, the flow rate, and the chosen product need to work together. A filter marketed as a sand filter should therefore not automatically be filled with filter balls. Check both the filter manufacturer’s and the filter media’s instructions before making a change.

Five questions to answer before switching

  1. Is the material allowed in my filter model?Have the filter designation and installation manual ready. Ask for a written confirmation if the combination is not specified.
  2. How much should be filled in?Use the product’s table for the relevant tank. A specified amount of sand in kilograms must not be replaced with the same weight of filter balls.
  3. How should the material be cleaned? Some products require the balls to be removed for cleaning. Do not assume that the sand filter’s normal backwash routine is sufficient.
  4. Which chemicals are compatible?Check flocculants, clarifiers, and cleaning products in particular. Compatibility needs to be clear for both the material and the filter.
  5. How are maintenance and warranty affected?Compare service work and spare parts together with the purchase price. Save the instructions and confirmations from the supplier.

Filter balls, filter sand, or filter glass?

Material Practical difference Important check
Filter balls Light fibrous material with product-specific cleaning. Approved tank, fill quantity, and wash or replacement routine.
Filter sand Heavier mineral material that is normally cleaned by backwashing. Correct grain size, quantity, and backwash flow.
Filter glass Granulated material with specified grain size and filling instructions. Approval for the filter and correct distribution if multiple fractions are used.

Avoid comparing only claims about how small the particles the material captures are. Test conditions, filter size, and water flow need to be comparable. For an existing system, documented compatibility is a good starting point. See our sand filters and filtration options.

Can filter balls be backwashed or washed?

It depends on the product. Follow the cleaning method explicitly stated and check whether a mesh bag, removal, or replacement is part of the routine. Do not use detergent, fabric softener, or a machine wash unless approved by the manufacturer. Residues from unsuitable agents can be carried back into the pool water.

Before opening a filter, circulation must be safely shut off, automatic restart prevented, and pressure relieved according to the manual. Do not change valve positions while the pump is running if the equipment instructions require the pump to be switched off.

Cloudy water is not an automatic reason to change the material.First check water values, flow, and that the existing filter is installed and maintained correctly. Changing the material does not compensate for inadequate disinfection.

Follow up performance after a change

Note which material and quantity are used. Save pressure or flow at normal operation if the system has such measurement. Track water clarity and maintenance needs over time. If particles return to the pool or resistance rises quickly, the cause needs to be investigated before adding more material.

Frequently asked questions

How many filter balls equal a bag of sand?

There is no universal conversion for all products and filters. Use the quantity table for the chosen product and filter model.

Can I mix filter balls and sand?

Only if the manufacturer explicitly describes such a setup. Different materials may have different requirements for filling and cleaning.

Do flocculants work with filter balls?

This must be confirmed for the specific combination. Do not use a flocculant on the assumption that all filter media work the same way.
