Wrinkles in Pool Liner – Causes and the Right Remedy
Pooltime · Liner & maintenance
Wrinkles in a pool liner can have different causes depending on when they appear. Document the change and check the water balance, temperature, and installation before trying to correct the liner.

Why does a pool liner wrinkle?
The liner is a waterproof layer that should fit the shape of the pool and be supported by the base. Wrinkles that appear directly after installation should be assessed as an installation issue. Wrinkles that appear after a period of use may instead need to be investigated together with water chemistry, temperature, and changes behind the liner.
Long-term incorrect water balance can affect the liner material. Low pH is a known possible cause of wrinkles. High temperature can increase stress on the material, but the temperature limit varies between products. A single photo can therefore not determine either the cause or whether the wrinkles can be removed.
Gather the right documentation
- Determine when the change began. After a new installation, refilling, a period with warm water, or heavy rain? Also note whether the pool has recently been lowered or drained.
- Photograph it the same way. Take an overview photo and close-ups. Mark on a simple sketch whether the wrinkles are on the floor, the walls, or near a staircase.
- Measure and save the water values. Document pH, sanitiser level, and temperature. Older test results are valuable because today's values do not show how the water has been before.
- Bring out the liner details. Model, installation year, material thickness, and care instructions are needed to assess the correct action.
Different situations require different assessments
Wrinkles after new installation
Contact the installer before the installation or filling continues. Fit, suspension, base, and working conditions need to be checked against the installation instructions.
Wrinkles that appeared later
Review the history of water balance and temperature. If the liner seems to lift or the change follows rain or a changed water level, water behind the liner and drainage should also be assessed.
Can I smooth out the wrinkles myself?
Do not try to solve the problem by draining the pool, heating the liner with a heat gun, or pulling on the material with hard tools. This can damage both the liner and the fittings. Draining can also change the support against the liner and the relationship to water outside the pool.
An installer can assess whether the liner can be adjusted, whether water behind it needs to be dealt with, or whether the material has changed so that replacement is a better option. There is no general guarantee that all wrinkles will disappear when the water values are restored.
Temperature is model-specific: Pooltime product details for Snap-in Liner 0.75 mm patterned state up to 28 °C. Always use the limit for the liner you actually have, not a general value from another product.
Prevent new problems
Keep the water balance within the ranges specified by the pool and liner supplier. Document test results and temperature even when the water looks clear. Never place concentrated chemicals directly against the liner. Follow the dosing instructions and use cleaning equipment that is suitable for the surface layer.
Check the water values before winter closing and follow the recommended water level for the pool model. If a liner replacement is planned, the base, penetrations, and fittings should also be inspected so that the cause of previous problems does not carry over to the new liner. See our pool liners and accessories if a replacement needs to be investigated.
Frequently asked questions
Do wrinkles disappear when the pool is filled?
Some adjustments can be made during a proper new installation, but existing wrinkles should be assessed based on their cause. More water is not a general solution.
Can low pH cause wrinkles in the liner?
Yes, pH that is too low for a long period can affect the material and cause wrinkles. Restore the water balance according to the instructions and let the supplier assess the liner.
Do wrinkles mean the liner is leaking?
Not necessarily. If the water level is also dropping, tightness and evaporation need to be investigated separately. Avoid pulling on the liner to look for a hole.
