Pool Pump Electricity Consumption – Calculate kWh and Cost
Pool guide · Energy & operation
A pool pump’s electricity consumption depends on the electrical power it actually uses and how long it runs. Calculate kWh and electricity cost with your own values here.

How much electricity does a pool pump use?
A circulation pump that uses 0.75 kW and runs 8 hours per day consumes 6 kWh per day. Over 180 operating days, that comes to 1,080 kWh. At an assumed variable total price of 2 kr/kWh, that equals 2,160 kr for the period. This is an example calculation, not a recommended operating time or a promise of your consumption.
Formula: power in kW × hours = energy in kWh. Energy in kWh × price in kr/kWh = cost in kronor. If the power is stated in watts, divide the value by 1,000.
Calculate your pool pump’s electricity cost
Use the pump’s measured or stated electrical input power at the current operating mode. Decimal separators can be a comma or a period.
Example: 6 kWh per day and 1,080 kWh over 180 days. Cost: 2,160 kr at 2 kr/kWh.
Enter the price per kWh you want to use, including relevant variable fees and VAT. Fixed subscription fees are not included. The calculator applies only to the circulation pump.
Distinguish between the pump’s power and the heat pump’s power
The circulation pump moves water through the filtration system. The pool heat pump heats the water and should be calculated separately. Therefore, do not use the heat pump’s stated heating output in this calculator.
For the circulation pump, it is the electrical input power, often designated P1, that is relevant. The motor’s output power P2 or a value in HP/hk is not the same as electricity use from the grid. If the nameplate shows several values, you need to check the manual. A measurement at your actual operating conditions provides a better basis than relying on the model name.
How to calculate with multiple speeds
A variable-speed pump can have different power levels at different RPMs. Calculate each operating mode separately and add up the energy. You can use the calculator multiple times.
| Example operating mode | Power | Time per day | Energy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lower speed | 0.20 kW | 12 hours | 2.4 kWh |
| Higher speed | 0.75 kW | 2 hours | 1.5 kWh |
| Total | Two operating modes | 14 hours | 3.9 kWh per day |
The table is a standalone example calculation. It does not describe performance or suitable settings for a specific pump.
Reduce electricity use with the right operation
- Measure the current situation. Note the pump model, speeds, operating times and consumption before changing anything.
- Check the whole system. The flow must work with the filter, heat pump and any salt chlorinator or dosing equipment. Follow the equipment’s requirements.
- Maintain filters and strainer baskets. Follow the instructions in the manual and check the system pressure and operation.
- Compare an adjustable pump. Variable speed makes it possible to adapt operation, but the savings depend on the installation and your previous settings.
Astralpool Victoria+ Silent VS is an example in our range with variable speed and timer control. The choice should be based on the pump curve, desired flow and system resistance, not only on horsepower.
Frequently asked questions
How many hours should a pool pump run?
There is no number of hours that suits all pools. Pool volume, load, temperature, flow and connected filtration equipment affect the need. Use the operating instructions for your system; the calculator’s 8 hours is only an example.
How do I convert watts to kWh?
Divide watts by 1,000 to get kW. Then multiply by the number of operating hours. Example: 500 W × 10 hours ÷ 1,000 = 5 kWh.
Can I use the calculator for a variable-speed pump?
Yes. Enter the electrical power and time for one operating mode at a time and add the results. Use measured values or the manufacturer’s data for the current speed.
Does the cost of heating the pool count?
No. Heating, lighting and other equipment are calculated separately. Read our guide on pool heat pump consumption.
