Effective methods for quickly heating up your pool

Want to heat your pool faster? Start by reducing heat loss and making sure the heater is operating under the right conditions. How long heating takes depends on water volume, starting temperature, weather, and the heater's actual output.

1. Retain heat when the pool is not in use

Cover the pool with a suitable pool cover between swims. A covered water surface reduces evaporation and helps retain heat, especially on cool nights. A heat-retaining cover is not automatically a safety cover; check the documentation for the product you use. Compare slatted covers and pool enclosure based on the pool's dimensions and how the cover is to be handled.

2. Choose a heater for your swimming season

A pool heat pump transfers heat from outdoor air to the pool water. Compare the heat output and efficiency at the air and water temperatures relevant to your pool. A power rating from warm test conditions does not automatically describe performance on a cold spring day.

Electric heaters, heat exchangers, and solar collectors work in different ways and need to be selected based on the installation. Solar collectors heat water using solar energy, while solar panels produce electricity. These are different systems with different installation requirements.

3. Check operation and water flow

• Make sure the heater is set to heating and the desired temperature.
• Check filters and pump baskets according to the maintenance instructions.
• Make sure circulation and water flow meet the heater's requirements.
• Keep the heat pump's air passages clear and follow the manufacturer's placement requirements.
• Read any error codes in the manual before changing settings.

4. Follow the temperature rise

Measure at the same time and location in the pool, and note the weather, cover, and operating time. This will show whether heat is building up over the day or being lost between runs. Expect a cold pool to take longer to heat than to keep warm once the target temperature has been reached.
