A pool pump is a vital part of the pool system, comparable to the function of the heart in the body. Although it is rarely the most visible component, its efficient operation is crucial for maintaining a clean, healthy and inviting pool environment. It is therefore of the utmost importance to carefully consider the choice of pump and its required power from the outset.

The primary function of the pool pump is to continuously circulate water from the pool, direct it through a purifying filtration system, and then return it to the pool. For this process to take place efficiently and without interruption, the pump must be optimally suited to its specific task. The question then arises: how do you choose the right pump for this purpose?

The capacity of the pool pump is mainly defined by two central factors: the pool's total size, which directly correlates with the water volume to be circulated, and the pump's position in relation to the pool's water outlet, often called the skimmer.

As a general guideline, the pool pump should be able to circulate one quarter of the pool's total water volume per hour. Pump capacity is usually specified in cubic meters per hour (m3/h). By dividing the pool's total water volume by four, you obtain the recommended minimum capacity for the pool pump, which simplifies the selection process.

Determining the exact required power, expressed in horsepower (HP) or kilowatts (kW), to achieve optimal water flow is a more complex calculation. This power is affected by several variables, including the distance the water needs to travel from the outlet to the pool pump. In addition, the height difference between the pump and the pool plays a significant role, as the water must be pumped upward. To ensure an accurate calculation and avoid incorrect choices, we strongly recommend consulting us or another qualified expert. As a rough estimate, however, for a pool measuring 4×8 meters with a depth of 1,5 meters, a pool pump with around 1 horsepower (equivalent to 0,75 kilowatt) is often sufficient.
