It is about restoring the balance between water chemistry, circulation, and filtration - in the right order. Fix cloudy pool water quickly by finding the cause
Cloudiness occurs when very small particles remain suspended in the water instead of being captured by the filter. In Swedish gardens, the problem is especially common after heavy pollen fall, heavy rain, heat waves, or days when the pool is used by many swimmers.
The visible symptom does not always say exactly what is wrong. If the water is evenly whitish with no tint, filter capacity, pH level, or calcium precipitation are common causes. Start with pH and alkalinity
pH determines how effectively the chlorine can work. When pH is too high, disinfection becomes weaker, even if the reading shows that there is chlorine in the water. When pH is too low, the water can become aggressive toward the pool's components and unpleasant for skin and eyes. For most private pools, a pH of around 7,2-7,6 works well.
Alkalinity acts as a stabilizing foundation for pH. If it is too low, pH can fluctuate sharply from day to day. Make sure disinfection is sufficient
When cloudiness is due to organic contaminants, the water needs sufficient disinfection capacity. Check both free chlorine and, if your test can show it, combined chlorine. A higher combined chlorine reading may indicate that the chlorine has been working hard and needs to be renewed through shock chlorination.
Shock chlorinate only once the pH is correct. Otherwise, the treatment will be less effective. Do not swim during the treatment and wait until the water values have returned to a safe level according to the product instructions. For a saltwater pool, you should also check salinity, the cell function, and that the system is actually producing the amount of chlorine required by the pool's load.
The filter determines how quickly the pool water clears
Correct water values are not enough if the filter is not capturing the particles. Sand filters, glass filters, and cartridge filters work in different ways, but the principle is the same: the water must circulate long enough and the filter must be clean enough to do its job.
Check the pressure gauge if you have a sand or glass filter. A pressure clearly above normal often shows that the filter needs backwashing. Backwash according to the system instructions and finish with rinsing before returning to filtration. However, if you backwash too often, you may reduce the filter's ability to capture the very smallest particles, so go by pressure and not just the calendar.
If you have a cartridge filter, the cartridge needs to be removed and cleaned thoroughly. A quick rinse may be enough for light dirt, but if there are deposits of grease, limescale, or fine particles, a more thorough cleaning may be needed. Replace the cartridge when it no longer becomes clean or when the flow continues to be weak after cleaning.
Let the circulation pump run longer than usual when the water is cloudy. During an ongoing treatment, continuous operation for one to two days may be reasonable, depending on the size of the pool, the temperature, and how severe the cloudiness is. Also check that the skimmer basket, pump basket, and inlets are free from leaves and debris. Restricted flow means that even a well-maintained filter loses effectiveness.
When flocculation is the right solution
Flocculant can be very effective when the cloudiness consists of particles so small that the filter cannot capture them. The product makes the particles clump together so that they either get caught in the filter or sink to the bottom. It is an effective measure, but it must be used precisely.
For continuous flocculation, a flocculant pad is often used in the skimmer together with a sand or glass filter. It can help the filter capture finer particles for a few days. Always check that the product is intended for your specific filter type. Flocculant pads should normally not be used in cartridge filters, as they can clog the cartridge.
For heavily cloudy water, a fast flocculation treatment can make the particles sink to the bottom. Then the pool needs to stand still for the time stated on the product. After that, vacuum the bottom very carefully to waste, not back through the filter, so that the dirt does not go through the system again. Flocculation does not replace balanced water values or a functioning filter. If used as a shortcut in a pool with the wrong pH or poor circulation, the problem often returns.
Prevent the cloudiness from returning
Once the pool is clear, you want it to stay a place for relaxation, not a recurring troubleshooting task. A stable maintenance routine reduces the risk of having to make major emergency interventions in the middle of the swimming season.
Measure water values at least once or twice a week during peak season, and more often in heat, heavy use, or after heavy rain. Clean the waterline and vacuum the pool regularly, since dirt that is left behind will eventually break down and burden the chemistry. Also keep the water level correct so the skimmer can work effectively.
A pool enclosure or a well-fitted cover reduces the amount of pollen, leaves, and airborne debris that ends up in the water.
