Cartridge filter for pool – choose the right one and maintain the filter
Pooltime · Filtration & maintenance
A cartridge filter captures particles in a replaceable filter element. Here, you get help comparing filter types, finding the right cartridge, and planning cleaning based on your pool and filtration system.

How does a pool cartridge filter work?
The pool pump drives the water through a filter medium, often a pleated polyester element. Particles are trapped in the material while the water returns to the pool. The filter cartridge is removed and cleaned when the load requires it. Filtration itself does not replace disinfection or control of the water balance.
Cartridge filters are available for different types of systems. Therefore, assess the current model's capacity and filter area. A small filter for a simple above-ground pool and a larger cartridge filter system should not be compared solely based on the term cartridge filter.
Four things to check before choosing
- The pool's water volume and use. Start with the correct measurements and calculate the pool volume. Bathing load, leaves, and surrounding vegetation affect how often the filter needs maintenance.
- The flow through the entire system. Match the filter, pump, piping, and any heater. The pump's maximum catalogue flow is not automatically the flow in your finished system.
- Space for service. It must be possible to open the filter housing and lift out the entire cartridge. Also check shut-off, draining, and access to connections.
- Access to the correct replacement cartridge. Save the filter model and article number. Length, outer diameter, openings, and connection must match; a cartridge that looks identical may have the wrong fit.
Cartridge filter or sand filter?
| Question | Cartridge filter | Sand filter |
|---|---|---|
| How is the filter maintained? | The element is usually removed and cleaned. | The filter bed is normally cleaned by backwashing. |
| What needs to be planned? | Access for cartridge replacement and a place for cleaning. | Space, valve handling, and disposal of backwash water. |
| What determines the choice? | Approved flow, filter area, cartridge cost, and maintenance requirements. | Approved flow, filter size, and recommended filter media. |
Compare the specific model and its maintenance requirements. Neither water clarity nor energy consumption can be determined from the filter type alone. You can find other filtration options among our sand filters.
Clean the cartridge without damaging the material
Turn off the system and prevent automatic restart. Follow the filter manual's sequence for shut-down, pressure relief, and opening. A pressurised filter housing must not be opened. Remove the cartridge and rinse between the pleats with a regular garden hose according to the manufacturer's advice. Avoid pressure washers and tools that may damage the filter material.
Grease or stubborn deposits may require a cleaning agent approved specifically for the cartridge. Do not use household cleaners or your own chemical mix. At the same time, check the seals and that the element is intact. Reassemble, bleed, and start according to the manual.
Follow the change over time: note pressure and flow when the filter is clean, if the system has these measurements. The cleaning threshold is model-specific. Repeated poor flow after cleaning needs troubleshooting before you simply replace the cartridge.
Frequently asked questions
How often should a cartridge filter be cleaned?
Follow the manufacturer's interval and signs of increased resistance or reduced flow. Heavy bathing load and lots of particles may mean cleaning is needed sooner.
Can the cartridge filter be backwashed?
Typical cartridge filters are maintained by removing the element. Use another method only if the manual explicitly describes it for your model.
When do I need to replace the filter cartridge?
Replace it if damaged, deformed, or when proper cleaning no longer restores function and other faults have been ruled out. Always check the correct article number.
