This is how you find and fix a leak in the pool

If the water level in the pool drops, you need to distinguish a possible leak from evaporation, splashing, and water loss during, for example, backwashing. Start by documenting the change. Do not empty the pool as the first troubleshooting step.

1. Note the water level and conditions

Mark the level and measure it at the same time each day. Note whether the pool has been covered, whether it has rained or been windy, whether anyone has swum, and whether the filter has been backwashed. Also note when water has been added. A lower water level does not, on its own, prove that there is a leak.

In the event of rapid or significant water loss, you need to contact a pool technician immediately. Do not let the circulation pump run without the water level and flow required by the manufacturer.

2. Perform a visual inspection

• Look for drips and moisture around visible pipes, valves, the pump, and the filter.
• Check whether water is coming from the backwash or drain line when it should not be.
• Photograph visible damage to the liner, skimmer, inlets, and other penetrations.
• Note whether the leak seems to change between different normal operating modes, without running the equipment outside its instructions.

Do not open pressurised filters or electrical equipment to look for the fault. If water reaches electrical components, keep your distance and let qualified help assess the situation.

3. Let the pool material determine the repair

Damage to a liner, a leaking fitting, and damage to a preformed pool shell require different measures. Do not use the same sealant for all types of leaks. Check material compatibility and the manufacturer's repair instructions before applying anything.

4. Do not empty the pool without an assessment

The water may be part of the support for the pool structure. Groundwater and soil pressure must be taken into account before the level is lowered.
