The most common reason for expensive spring start-ups is not the winter itself, but failing to winterize the pool properly before the cold arrives. When the water level, chemistry, pipework, and cover are not adapted to the Swedish climate, the risk of frost cracks, discoloured water, and unnecessarily damaged components increases. Proper winterization is therefore less about "shutting down" and more about securing the entire installation for several months of inactivity.

For homeowners who have invested in a high-quality pool environment, this is a step that deserves the same care as choosing the pool, pool enclosure, or purification system. If done properly in autumn, spring opening becomes easier, operating costs more predictable, and the pool's lifespan better in the long term.

When is it time to winterize the pool?

The timing is mainly determined by the water temperature. A good rule of thumb is to wait until the water is consistently around 10 degrees or lower. If you close it too early, while the water is still relatively warm, there is a greater risk that bacteria and algae will continue to develop under the cover. If you wait too long, the first frosty night may already have affected pipes, heaters, and other equipment.

In large parts of Sweden, this often means sometime from late September to November, but it depends on the type of pool, its location, the weather, and whether the pool is protected by, for example, pool enclosure. Proper pool winterization starts with clean and balanced water

Many people focus directly on draining pipes and lowering the water level, but the foundation is always water quality. A pool that is closed with dirty or chemically unbalanced water is more likely to develop deposits, limescale build-up, and discolouration that are far more troublesome to deal with in spring.

If the pH is wrong for an extended period, the liner, joints, metal parts, and other equipment may all be negatively affected.

At the same time, it is important not to overdose chemicals without a plan. The exact method depends on the pool's material, purification system, and water condition. Lower the water level - but no more than necessary

How much water should be drained depends on the pool's construction and which built-in components it has. There is no universal solution that suits everyone. For some pools, it is enough to lower the level below the inlets and nozzles. For others, a different level is needed depending on the steps, skimmer, pool roof solution, or winter plugs.

A common mistake is that pool owners drain too much water "just to be safe." This can create unnecessary stress on the structure, especially if the ground conditions are damp or the groundwater level is high. An in-ground pool is designed to work with the water mass as a counterforce. Therefore, large drainage should be approached with caution unless it is explicitly recommended for the specific model.

The result can be cracks that do not become noticeable until spring start-up, when the system is pressurised again.

That is why the circulation system needs to be drained properly. The pump, filter, and heater must be drained according to the manufacturer's instructions. In some installations, parts are dismantled and stored in a frost-free place; in others, it is enough to open drains and ensure that no water remains in sensitive sections. If you have above-ground pipework or equipment in an uninsulated space, the requirements are even higher.

Nozzles and pipes can often be secured with winter plugs or expansion protection. The purpose is to reduce the risk of damage if any remaining moisture freezes. But here too, the right solution depends on the design of the system. A premium build with several water features, a counter-current unit, or integrated lighting often requires a more carefully planned shutdown than a simpler standard pool.

Don't forget the filter and cleaning equipment

Sand filters, cartridge filters, and glass media filters have different needs before winter. Regardless of filter type, the system should be clean before being left idle for several months. Organic material left behind can cause odours, deposits, and impaired performance.

Automatic pool robots, hoses, and manual cleaning equipment should also be taken out, cleaned, and stored dry and frost-free. It sounds obvious, but accessories are often forgotten when the focus is on the pool shell itself. That type of wear is unnecessarily expensive, especially when you have chosen quality products to achieve a low total cost of ownership over time.

Covering the pool properly makes a big difference

Once the winter closing itself is done, the protection from above remains. This is where the difference between various solutions becomes clear. A sturdy pool enclosure or a proper winter cover reduces the amount of dirt in the water, lessens the strain from the weather, and makes opening considerably easier. For Swedish conditions, it is crucial that the cover is designed for snow, wind, and prolonged exposure.

A simple summer cover is rarely the right choice for winter storage. It can collect water, provide less safety, and break down more quickly from weather exposure. A more carefully considered cover not only provides better durability but also a safer and easier-to-maintain solution for households where the pool area is part of the long-term outdoor environment.

If you have a pool enclosure, the conditions for winter closing also change. The enclosure provides effective protection against leaves, precipitation, and much of the external impact, but it does not replace the need for a correct water level, proper water chemistry, and frost protection for the equipment. The enclosure is part of the whole, not a shortcut around the groundwork.

Common mistakes when winterizing a pool properly

The first mistake is waiting too long and hoping that "it will probably be fine" for a few more nights. Frost is rarely forgiving. The second is closing with incorrect water values, which creates an unnecessarily difficult starting point in spring.

A third mistake is treating all pools the same. A glasfiberpool, thermopool, above-ground pool, or PP pool may have different requirements depending on the construction and technical package. The same applies if the pool has steps, a slatted cover, a pool enclosure, or advanced water treatment. What works in one installation may not be right in another.

The fourth mistake is underestimating the bigger picture. Winterization is not just a chemistry issue and not just a plumbing issue. It is the interaction between water, materials, technology, and protection that determines the final result.

For many homeowners, it is entirely possible to do parts of the winterization themselves, especially if they have a straightforward installation and clear instructions.
