Groundwork for a long-lasting pool

A pool can look finished in just a few days, but it is groundworks for pool installation that determine how the facility performs after five, ten, and twenty years. A foundation that shifts, drainage that is insufficient, or incorrect height setting can create costs that are far more difficult to remedy once the pool, decking, and pool cover are already in place.

For Swedish homeowners, groundworks therefore involve more than digging a hole. It is the beginning of a pool environment that must withstand frost, rain, snowmelt, loads from surrounding surfaces, and active family life. When the groundwork is planned correctly, the installation becomes safer, operation simpler, and the final result more sustainable over time.

Start with the site, not with the excavator

Every plot has its own conditions. The load-bearing capacity of the ground, differences in level, bedrock, clay, groundwater, and existing utilities all affect the method, time required, and cost. That is why the pool location needs to be assessed before the pool model and the level of the finished pool environment are decided.

A relatively level plot with well-drained, stable ground often provides an easier starting point. On a sloping plot, retaining walls, terracing, or special solutions may instead be required to handle earth pressure and runoff. If bedrock is close to the surface, blasting may become necessary. Clay and soft soil layers may mean deeper excavation, geotextile, reinforcement, or extra compaction.

Also consider how the garden will be used around the pool. The pool’s placement affects privacy, sun, wind, and distance to the house, but also how easy it will be to run electricity, water, and any pipes to the equipment room. A location that feels perfect visually can become unnecessarily expensive if it requires long utility runs or complicated access for the excavator and deliveries.

Before work begins, you should check which rules apply in your municipality. Requirements for planning permission or notification vary depending, among other things, on the pool design, any walls, height differences, and how close to the property boundary the installation will be placed.

Groundworks for pool installation - what is included?

The scope depends on the pool type and the plot, but professional groundworks usually follow a clear sequence. This reduces the risk of an early mistake being built into the next stage.

First, the ground is excavated to the correct depth and with sufficient working space around the pool. The excavation depth must take into account the pool structure, sub-base, insulation, base slab, and the finished height of paving stones, decking, or other pool decking. It is the finished level that matters - not just where the pool edge ends up in relation to the lawn before construction starts.

The base is then prepared. Geotextile is often used to separate soil from the load-bearing material, followed by a draining and well-compacted layer of crushed material. Compaction is essential. A sub-base that looks even but has not been compacted in the correct layers can settle over time, especially at edges and where the ground is loaded by decking, stone, or pool cover rails.

For many in-ground pools, a reinforced concrete slab is then poured. The slab must be level, have the correct dimensions, and be built according to the pool supplier’s specifications. Small deviations in level can have major consequences for the installation of the pool shell, the waterline, and the tightness of the installation.

Around the pool, the area is then backfilled with suitable material according to the chosen pool construction. Here, the requirements differ between, for example, PP pools, thermopools, and fiberglass pools. You cannot assume that the same backfill, drainage, or assembly principle suits all models.

Drainage protects the pool and the garden

Water in the ground is one of the most important issues to resolve before the pool is installed. Rainwater, surface water, and snowmelt must be directed away from the pool area in a controlled way. Otherwise, water can collect around the structure, create pressure against the pool walls, and make the ground around the pool unstable or wet.

The drainage solution needs to be adapted to the ground conditions and height setting. In some projects, a well-built sub-base and a natural fall away from the pool are enough. In others, drainage pipes, draining crushed stone, and a well-thought-out solution for where the water should go are needed. On plots with high groundwater or very dense soil, the issue may need extra careful investigation.

The pool deck should also have a slope that carries rainwater away from the pool edge and buildings. This is not about large inclines that affect the feel underfoot, but about small, precise level differences. When this is planned from the outset, you often avoid later adjustments with drains, channels, or repaving.

Pool type and pool enclosure affect the groundwork

The pool’s construction determines how the base should be built. A thermopool is usually built on a poured slab and requires precision in both foundation work and backfilling. A PP pool is delivered as a prefabricated welded shell, which places high demands on a perfectly correct slab and careful planning of lifting, transport route, and backfill. Fiberglass pools also have special requirements regarding the base and support around the shell.

The pool cover should also be included in the planning from the very first drawing. Rails, fixings, and the area next to the pool must have a stable, straight, and durable base. A premium cover is designed to withstand the Swedish climate and extend the swimming season, but its function depends on the installation being carried out at the correct levels. A skewed or moving base can make the cover run poorly or be stressed incorrectly.

If you are planning slatted safety covers, integrated lighting, counter-current system or a special pool deck, these choices should also be included in the design. It is easier and more cost-effective to prepare penetrations, electrical conduits, and space for equipment before the slab is poured than to solve it afterwards.

The equipment area needs the same care

The pool equipment is the heart of the installation. Pump, filter, heat pump, controls, and water treatment need a location that is accessible, protected, and planned for maintenance. An equipment room can be placed adjacent to the pool, in a garage, storage room, or in a separate equipment box - the right solution depends on the project’s conditions.

What matters is that pipe runs, electricity, and drainage are coordinated with the groundworks. Shorter pipe routes can make both installation and operation easier, but the placement of the equipment must at the same time work aesthetically and practically in everyday life. Also plan for future servicing: filters should be easy to clean and equipment should be replaceable without having to tear up decking or stone.

Common shortcuts that become expensive

It is rarely the excavation itself that causes problems. The risks arise when the project is oversimplified or when responsibility between different parties becomes unclear. A few points are especially important to secure before construction begins:

  • The finished height of the pool must be decided in relation to the house, lawn, patio, and drainage.
  • The sub-base and concrete slab must meet the requirements for the specific pool model to be installed.
  • Drainage and management of surface water must be resolved before backfilling and pool decking are built.
  • Technology, electricity, lighting, and the pool enclosure should be included in the same planning as excavation and foundation work.
It can be tempting to choose the lowest price for the groundworks and make detailed decisions later. But a pool installation consists of parts that affect one another. A quotation that clearly describes excavation, haul-away, sub-base, slab, drainage, backfill, and preparations for equipment provides a better basis for decision-making than a price for "foundation work" alone.

This reduces the risk of misunderstandings regarding dimensions, responsibilities, and technical requirements.
