Closing a saltwater pool for winter requires more than simply switching off the circulation pump when swim season is over. The salt itself does not change the risk of frost damage, but the salt chlorinator cell, control system, and piping must be handled correctly. A well-executed winter shutdown protects your investment, makes spring opening easier, and creates better conditions for clear water when the warm weather returns.
For a pool in the Swedish climate, the goal is simple: the water should be clean and balanced, all sensitive equipment should be protected, and no water-filled parts should be able to freeze and burst. The exact method depends on pool type, filtration system, heating, and cover, but the basics are the same for most saltwater pools.
When should you winterize a saltwater pool?
Wait until the water temperature is stably around 10-12 degrees or lower. At that temperature, algae growth clearly slows down, while the risk of warm autumn water turning green under the cover decreases. If you close it too early, the pool may need more chemical treatment and monitoring during the autumn. If you wait too long, however, you risk night frost and sudden temperature changes.
The salt chlorinator should normally not be used when the water gets cold. The cell's output drops at low temperatures, and some systems show warnings or stop automatically. Always follow the manufacturer’s recommendation for your specific equipment, but plan to switch off salt production before temperatures fall too far.
Preferably choose a dry day and set aside enough time. It is much easier to do the work methodically than to try to rescue a frozen installation after the season's first cold snap.
Prepare the water before winter shutdown
A clean pool at closing makes for a much easier start in spring. Begin by vacuuming the bottom, brushing the walls, cleaning the waterline, and emptying the skimmer baskets and the pump strainer. Remove leaves and organic material thoroughly. Small amounts of dirt can otherwise become food for algae under the cover for several months.
Then test the water and adjust the values before you shut down the system. As a guideline, pH is usually best around 7,2-7,6 and alkalinity around 80-120 ppm. Proper balance reduces the risk of scale, corrosion, and cloudy water. Which values are suitable in detail depends, among other things, on the pool surface, water source, and the chemical plan you use.
Then carry out a final disinfection according to the instructions for your pool chemicals. Once the salt chlorinator has been switched off, you can, if needed, use a suitable shock treatment to reduce organic contamination. Let the circulation run until the water is thoroughly mixed. Do not add winter chemicals immediately before draining or flushing the system, as they will then not have time to do any good in the pool water.
Salt does not protect against frost
A common misconception is that saltwater cannot freeze. The salt content in a typical pool with a salt chlorinator is often around 3-5 grams per liter, far below the level that would provide meaningful frost protection in a Swedish winter. Pipes, pump, filter, and heater must therefore always be drained or frost-protected according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Protect the salt chlorinator, pump, and heater
The salt cell is one of the parts that deserves extra care. Switch off the power to the salt chlorinator and remove the cell if the system instructions recommend it. Inspect it for scale or buildup, but clean it only when truly necessary and using the correct method. Unnecessary cleaning with strong acid can shorten the cell's lifespan.
Store the removed cell in a frost-free, dry place, together with any sensors and loose fittings. It is a good idea to label cables and parts if the installation is extensive. That saves time when it is time to start the swim season again.
Circulation pump, sand filter or cartridge filter, UV treatment, dosing equipment, and pool heat pump must also be handled according to their respective manuals. Switch off the power where necessary, open drain plugs, and let the water run out. The pool heat pump is particularly sensitive to frost if the heat exchanger remains filled with water.
If you have a heat pump, automatic dosing, or more advanced technology, it is often wise to have a qualified service technician check the shutdown. Proper servicing costs less than a cracked heat exchanger or damaged pump motor.
Drain the piping thoroughly
Frost damage rarely occurs in the pool shell itself. Instead, it happens when water remains in pipes, valves, pump, or filter and expands as it freezes. That is why the piping system is the most important part of winter shutdown.
Lower the water level only according to the instructions for your pool and your chosen winter cover. In many pools, the level is lowered below the inlets or skimmer, but the solution varies. A pool with certain types of pool enclosure, slatted cover, or special skimmer solutions may have different requirements. Never empty the pool completely unless the construction is expressly designed for it. The water often helps stabilize the pool against ground pressure and groundwater.
When the level is correct, blow out or drain the water from the pipes. This can be done with adapted equipment and the correct pressure, but the work must be carried out carefully. Excessive pressure can damage fittings, valves, and components. Then install winter plugs in the inlets and other connections. The skimmer may need a frost protection device or an expansion container that absorbs the movement of ice.
Also check that all drain plugs on the pump, filter, heater, and any water feature are open where required. It is not enough to simply close the valves—trapped water must have a way out.
Use winter chemicals wisely
A winter chemical can reduce the risk of algae, scale, and cloudy water, especially if the pool remains covered for a long time. However, it is no substitute for cleaning, balanced water values, and a properly frost-protected piping system. Dose according to the pool's water volume and follow the product instructions.
Avoid mixing chemicals on your own or using products that are not intended for the pool surface and filtration system. This is especially true if you have a liner, stainless steel details, automatic dosing, or a sensitive salt cell. Premium equipment lasts a long time when the chemistry is managed correctly, but incorrect dosing can create unnecessary problems that only become apparent at spring opening.
Cover the pool for a calmer winter
A winter cover should keep out light, leaves, and dirt and be suited to the weather conditions where you live. A pool enclosure provides very good protection against debris and can simplify maintenance during the season, but always check how it should be used in snow loads and winter storage. Not all models are designed to bear the same amount of snow.
Make sure the cover is taut and secured according to the instructions. Avoid letting large pools of water, piles of leaves, or heavy wet snow remain on it. Check the pool regularly during winter, especially after heavy snowfall, storms, or if the temperature changes rapidly between above and below zero.
A tight-fitting and correctly installed cover reduces the amount of dirt in the water, but it does not eliminate the need for supervision. Check that the water level does not change abnormally and that the cover, fastenings, and any pool enclosures are intact.

Before leaving the pool for winter, you should be able to tick off the following:
- The pool has been cleaned of leaves, dirt, and scale.
- The water values have been tested and adjusted before shutdown.
- The salt chlorinator is switched off and the salt cell is protected according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Pipes, pump, filter, and heater have been drained of water or properly frost-protected.
- Inlets, skimmer, and connections have the correct winter plugs and frost protection.
- The cover is properly installed and suited for winter weather.
