A glasfiberpool can in some projects be placed fully or partially above ground, but only if the selected model and installation are designed for it. Not all fiberglass shells are self-supporting when filled with water. The manufacturer’s installation instructions must therefore confirm how the walls are to be supported, what foundation is required, and how backfilling or support structure is to be carried out.

The pool is placed in a patio or slope where part of the wall lies above ground. The exposed side may require a designed support structure. Drainage and earth pressure must be handled according to the manufacturer’s requirements.

A wooden deck can conceal the difference in levels and create an accessible pool environment, but the deck does not replace structural support for the pool shell. Foundation, side support, and fixings must be designed separately.
Fully above ground
This places the greatest demands on the pool truly being intended for freestanding installation. The load-bearing capacity of the walls, reinforcement, base, and safe access must be documented. Do not order a standard in-ground model on the assumption that it can stand free.
This must be checked
- The model’s approved installation method and the manufacturer’s warranty terms.
- Foundation, normally a level, stable, and correctly sized base.
- Side support and backfilling for the parts not supported by the ground.
- Drainage and groundwater so that water does not create pressure or settlement.
- Frost and temperature changes in the base, pipes, and technical equipment.
- Transport and crane lifting since the pool is delivered as a finished shell.
- Stair, handrail, and fall protection for an elevated water level.
- Pool cover that suits the finished height and pool environment.

Is installation cheaper above ground?

Can the pool stand partially above ground on a slope?
